Pillow Book

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

enjoying the new Monday night class (even though I am completely knackered right now, I have way too much on my plate and it is all catching up with me!) at Art Center. We are exploring words–their power, their meaning, their usage etc. Last night we took a little sidetrack and considered the beauty of words–the physical beauty that is inherent in writing words. We watched a significant chunk of Peter Greenaway’s fascinating 1996 film, The Pillow Book–a strange meditation on the power and beauty of words–the delightful act of writing. (more…)

Best Place to Tie the Knot: Marvimon

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

We’ve all been there: hot Scottish boyfriend needs a green card and you’ve always wanted a European passport; or, your waif-y girlfriend has systemic candida and could suck some serious marrow out of your SAG health insurance. All signs point to happily ever after, so you throw both caution and commitment-phobia to the wind and decide to tie the knot.

You’ve got money, you’ve got style and you’ve got a Jewish mother on your back, which means Vegas is out, and there’s a reception to plan. Where shall you do the deed?

Veteran’s Bracelet Sparks Debate

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Things got a little testy on Fox and Friends on Monday when Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs suggested that the host might be “making stuff up” about the fallen veteran’s bracelet that his boss displayed during the first presidential debate with John McCain. Conservative talk show hosts have been making a lot of this story, so what is the truth?

Japanese-style Eco Wrap

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

When considering chic alternatives to paper gift wrap, or even the standard-issue cloth shopping bag that has become de rigueur for all eco-minded consumers, try experimenting with the Japanese tradition of furoshiki.

Furoshiki—literally “bath (furo) spread (shiki, a form of shiku=to spread)”—originated as a way to carry one’s clothes to, and mark one’s territory at, the public bathhouse. The centuries-old custom gradually developed into a stylish and functional wrapping technique, consisting of a square cloth made of silk, cotton, rayon or nylon tied in various styles and shapes to wrap gifts, clothes and other items.

More Than a Fashion Statement

Wednesday, October 1st, 2008

Apparently, Green is the New Black. (And because ever-trendy shops are selling t-shirts boasting that slogan, it must be true!). While the green-is-hip trend seems to be popping up everywhere, I started really noticing it with the rise of reusable grocery bags as a fashion piece. More and more, as I venture down Washington DC’s K Street, home of of the lobbying firms and three-piece suits, I keep catching impeccably dressed, high-heeled women with Whole Foods canvas bags slung over their shoulders in lieu of purses.
